SOLO TRAVELERS
Self-Guided. The type of individual who takes a self-guided tour will come even if he or she can’t convince anyone to join them for the adventure. And then, again, this species of rider sometimes prefers to go it alone. And sometimes, they go it alone together! This happens when two self-guided riders coincidentally choose the same tour on the same dates, as Michael Shirk of Austin and Todd Johnson of Minneapolis did in the Peloponnese. Their paces were different, but they’d rendezvous at day’s end in the hotel lobby or the same taverna sharing notes over a Mythos beer. A number of intrepid women have cycled solo, most spectacularly Leslie Stillwater who did a loop of the Peloponnese one year and came back two years later to conquer Crete.
Guided. Solo cyclists gravitate to guided tours because of the camaraderie created by the presence of other riders. Usually a single traveler, male or female, prefer their own room for which they pay a single supplement, but sometimes to avoid the single supplement increase, our clients are receptive to rooming with another rider who they have not met. Clair Powers of Oklahoma and Charmaine Ruppolt of Maryland took the risk of sharing a double room during the seven night Cycle Cyclades guided tour, and, surprise, they clicked and ended up best buds.
Single Supplement. Hotels charge an individual a higher rate to occupy what is actually a double room than if two people shared the same room. So tour operators pass on this additional charge, known as a single supplement, to single travelers.
